If you take a single wooden chopstick and try to bend it, it snaps instantly with very little effort.
That single chopstick is what happens when you buy just one small-cap stock based on a hot tip from an uncle at a coffee shop or a speculative headline.
When something goes wrong, the position breaks – and so does your investment capital.
Take a bundle of 20 chopsticks, however, and try to break them together.
You can bend them with all your strength, but that bundle simply will not break.
That is the entire secret to investing in small caps: you must build a resilient portfolio, not rely on a single fragile position.
The Structural Edge in Small-Caps
Large blue chips are covered by dozens of institutional analysts, making mispriced bargains rare.
Small caps, on the other hand, are often neglected by the street.
Some have no analyst coverage whatsoever.
If you do your own homework, that neglect is your structural edge.
What’s more, management at smaller companies is far more accessible.
Try calling the CEO of one of our three local banks to ask for a tour and you will likely be told to get lost.
But the CEO of a small-cap firm will often welcome an interested investor and walk you right through the factory floor.
Because small-caps have plenty of room to expand, the potential for multi-fold growth is enormous.
Remember that many of Singapore’s top 30 blue-chips started out as humble small-caps.
Three Ground Rules for Small-Cap Success
To capture that growth without snapping your capital, keep these three rules front and center:
- Avoid Inverted Pyramids: Follow a strict 60-30-10 asset allocation – 60% in income-generating small-caps, 30% in solid growth, and no more than 10% in speculative “fun” or hot sectors like AI and semiconductor chips. Putting all your money into hot trends turns your pyramid upside down, leaving it balanced on a fragile point that can collapse at any moment.
- Never Borrow to Buy: Margin lending forces you to sell when your lender demands repayment – often right at the bottom of a market panic.
- Build a Portfolio: Spread your risk across roughly 20 holdings. Share prices will fluctuate up and down individually, but collectively, a properly diversified bundle is impossible to break.
Get Smart: Conviction Beats Market Volatility
Small caps offer incredible long-term wealth creation, but relying on a single stock to double quickly is a recipe for heartbreak.
When you build a balanced, income-supported portfolio, you give small companies the time they need to mature into tomorrow’s blue-chip giants.
